Leo Burnett brings home an armful of Cannes Lions

EIGHT CANNES LIONS went to Leo Burnett for its “Van Gogh BnB” campaign that led to the Art Institute’s highest attendance in 15 years with online ticket sales up 250% and $6 million in earned media impressions. The campaign along won six Cannes Lions. The other two Cannes lions were awarded for Burnett’s work for United-Healthcare’s first national campaign.

FCB agency for Choose Chicago, city’s tourism arm

media series following “Edgar & Ellen” success

Star Farm Productions, creators of the phenomenally successful “Edgar and Ellen” children’s TV and web series, is developing new properties that also will evolve into multimedia formats.

Star Farm focuses on creative storytelling using print, television and the web to involve children in the creative process.

One of the new properties is “The Kinetics,” a dance, music and humor concept aimed at preschoolers. The pilot debuted last September at MIPCOM, Jr., the international children’s programming market.

Hutson: eatdrink’s ?armchair general’ marches to a different beat of music, effects and design

Chad Hutson’s trademark could be the jazzy visual projects he spices up with musical numbers, like the impossibly catchy Jens Lekman tune, “A Sweet Summer’s Night on Hammer Hill,” found on the demo reel of creative shop, eatdrink.

Hutson’s marketing work in Las Vegas for Audio post house Soundelux and earlier experience in sales and marketing in Nashville helped establish music industry contacts.

Musical heavy hitters R. Kelly and Talib Kweli joined Team Works Media’s usual roster of major sports entities, like Big Ten Basketball and the 1985 Chicago Bears, on recent projects.

For regular client Big Ten Men’s Basketball, TeamWorks created a TV campaign featuring rapper Talib Kweli performing the original song,”Welcome to the Big Stage.”

Freelance director Bill O’Neil shot Kweli on Essanay’s green screen stage against an animated background with game footage customized for each team and created the backgrounds in After Effects.

Hot on the heels of Kraft Heinz’s removal of all questionable ingredients from their Oscar Mayer hot dog line — including nitrates, nitrites, by-products and other artificial preservatives — the food giant has launched a new ad campaign via mcgarrybowen, Chicago.

The goal: to get every American, from coast-to-coast, to try their new signature product. Dubbed For the Love of Hot Dogs, the campaign, which began May 1, was developed to reignite interest in the official food of summer.

Trisect cuts staff in wake of ConAgra account changes

BLENDED AGENCY TRISECT a recently went through a rough patch that caused it to reduce staff by 25%, letting between 20 and 30 staffers go as a consequence of changes in the ConAgra account.

The agency explained in a statement that this was “a proactive step to ensure the agency is well aligned with rapidly shifting client needs and their demands for leaner, more nimble partners. SCC agency co-founder Mark Schafer dies suddenly at 58

A memorial service was held Monday for Mark Schafer, co-founder and chairman emeritus of Schafer Condon Carter, who died Thursday of a heart attack at age 58

Mr. Schafer had retired from the agency in 2014 and he and his wife, Katie, had purchased a farm near Mauston, Wisconsin, where they were living at the time of his death.

Mr. Schafer was called by the agency “An exceptional advertising and marketing leader, he was also a kind, calm and rock-solid individual who inspired colleagues and clients alike.”

Two Chicago agencies win ANA Multicultural Awards

The work of two Chicago agencies won the 16th ANA (Association of National Advertisers) Multicultural Excellence Awards, out of 33 nominees, at ceremonies Sunday in Los Angeles, climaxing the three day ANA oulticultural & Diversity conference.

McDonald’s and LimeGreen Moroch won the Grand Prize for two 30-second spots, “Slang” and “All Nighter,” and McDonald’s and IW Group of Hollywood won the Asian prize for the spot “Did you Eat Yet?”

The print prize went to Comcast Xfinity and Burrell Communications for two “Black History Month-The Next Greatest of All Time” ads.

Keeping up with Chicago filmmakers working in LA

A group of six ambitious Chicago transplants now working in LA gathered for more shop talk over breakfast at Kitchen 24 in West Hollywood last week.

They were screenwriters Dante Bacani and Ron Maede; standup comedian/producer Lindsey Luck; agency-turned-TV and comedy writer Parde Bridgett and actress and newly published children’s book author, Kelli McNeil and myself, a screenwriter and former agency creative.

The clothing line, “Classic Hoop Dreams,” will launch with a challenge in memory of 17-year old African American Trayvon Martin of Miami, who was fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.
