Production and post house Optimus announced the promotions of Mark Butchko to Creative Director and Jim Moss to Effects Artist.
In their new roles, Butchko will provide creative leadership on all design department projects and Moss will continue to support cross-departmental projects including design, VFX, motion graphics and finishing.
Chicago production and post house Optimus dialed up its sonic capabilities by promoting Marina Bacci to Senior Audio Engineer and Ben Treimer to Audio Engineer last week.
Highland Park native Marina joined Optimus as an intern shortly after graduating from DePaul University with a BS in Sound Recording Technology in 2008. Within nine years, her responsibilities had grown to include running the main audio studio and overseeing the audio department.
There will be no more gold…en arches for the Olympics as the fast food giant, effective immediately, has mutually parted ways with the IOC.
In a surprise move, McDonald’s Corp (Chicago agencies: We Are Unlimited and Burrell Communications) severed its 41-year-old alliance three years early. In a joint statement delivered June 16, the two organizations severed ties as the fast food giant continues to re-evaluate and focus on its core business. This, along with rising Olympic sponsorship costs and declining TV ratings, made for a combo platter of reasons for the separation.
We Are Unlimited, McDonald’s months-old agency of record, finally has its Crew Chief. The agency announced the appointment of Toygar Bazarkaya as its Chief Creative Officer. The international sensation brings over 600 awards, including more than 20 Cannes Lions, to the fledgling agency.
McDONALD’S FIRST WORK from its new agency, We are Unlimited Chicago, is a 60-second rap spot, “There’s a Big Mac for That.”
The original composition, with a drum marching band, is the backdrop for short scenes of consumers enjoying a Big Mac in their three new sizes: Regular, Grand Mac and Mac Jr.
The bitter rivalry between DDB vs. Burnett. Publicis vs. Omnicom. Keith vs. Leo, for the billion dollar prize, brought to us by McDonald’s, with a cast of bleary-eyed creatives caught in between, has ended.
The winner, as we all know, is Omnicom and DDB, meaning for the first time in 35 years everything on the menu is going to be served up by one yet-to-be-created agency.
This wouldn’t be the first time DDB started an agency for a single client, having successfully launched Element 79 in 2001 for Quaker Oats.
Marc Hauser, the iconic Chicago photographer who brought portraiture and and compelling black and white photography to the fore in print advertising, says he’s back and doing what he considers his strongest work.
ONE AT OPTIMUS has boosted its directors’ roster to 11 with the addition of a trio of award-winning directors. They are LA-based Danny J. Boyle and Ben Chappell, both known to Chicago clients through past associations, and director/photographer Ben Fink of New York.

Cossette of Quebec City, Canada is the new agency for McDonald’s Owner/Operators of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana (MOCNI), replacing Leo Burnett after three decades of advertising for McDonald’s 500 area restaurants.
Film production last year was an exception year, says Chicago Film Office director Rich Moskal. “The busiest we’ve ever seen” and the biggest – with estimated revenues at $358 million.
Overall production was up 20% over 2013 and total of 2,198 filming days and nearly 40% growth over the previous record in 2011.
Jeff Boyle of Catfish Music in River North remembers Chicago’s thriving commercial scoring business when he started out 20 years ago as a composer and how he has been part of the change.
“I landed in the eye of the storm at Com/track, which was scoring a lot of McDonalds and beers and airlines and the best thing was working at Chicago Recording and seeing the musicians and singers coming in and out the door,” Boyle says.
Let the Games begin. Starting tomorrow, most of the world’s sports enthusiasts (as well as many who have no particular interest in athletics) will turn their attention to London, England, where the 2012 Summer Olympic Games will formally commence with the usually thrilling opening ceremonies.
It’s hard to believe, but the McDonald’s “I’m Loving It” ad campaign will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year. Whatever its fate from here on out, “I’m Lovin’ It” already is the longest-running ad campaign and tagline in the history of the fast-food behemoth.
Hard to believe, indeed.
GREG ALLAN’S SONIXPHERE tapped New York-based Clint Arent as director of East Coast business development, to focus on New York agencies. “An increasing amount of our business originates on the East Coast and it’s important to have someone there who knows the market and our industry,” Allan says.
As Optimus’ long-time partner/senior colorist Craig Leffel moves over to director of production at ONE at Optimus, the post house’s production division, and Tyler Roth has joined Optimus as colorist after more than four years at Filmworkers Club.
Leffel will be working closely with ONE’s executive producer, Kipp Christiansen, who joined the company in June, 2010 and has been largely overseeing spot production in L.A., through Optimus’ Santa Monica office.
New York’s giant commercials industry tends to be all wrapped up in itself and when it’s spring awards time, the predictable winners are members of New York/Los Angeles companies and Chicagoans are nowhere in sight.
So the fact that the New York Festivals International Advertising Awards is anointing a Chicagoan for a once-in-a-lifetime honor is shockingly delightful news.
The downsizing of ad agencies continues to propel more talented commercial creatives and producers into the ever-swelling freelance market. Not that it’s a bad thing, as it appears that the freelance business is actually pretty good.
One of those thriving freelancers is Jessi Dana, who left DDB in late February, 2009 and has been freelancing for Y&R ever since.
Dana is the first in the Reel’s interviews with advertising professionals in Chicago’s freelance sector.

Paul Traynor of Hay Moon, Inc. is out to make “Witches’ Night” a horror movie for grown-ups on a $500,000 to $1 million budget he’s raising from private investors.
Traynor is courting investors with a demo scene he shot on HD last October at Moraine Hills State Park in McHenry, employing strikingly high production values.
His script follows four buddies on a camping trip who get lured into the occult sex rituals of a band of beautiful witches.
“I’ve always been afraid of witches since I was a kid, but I never got a sense of what they actually did,” said Traynor.
