Live from the Museum of Broadcast Communications it’s The SNL Experience!
According to The Chicago Tribune, a major, 500-artifact exhibit, chronicling the four-plus decades of NBC’s late-night topical humor sketch series, is coming to the Museum of Broadcast Communications in October.
The Museum’s founder, Bruce DuMont says the exhibit will change the dynamics of the museum. “It’s a grab for the gold ring. I think it’s going to dramatically change the museum for the better. We’re very excited about it. There’s going to be more attention, more traffic, more buzz about the things we do here.”
Beginning Oct. 21, the show is slated to run for 14 months at the North State Street museum that is celebrating its 35th anniversary but has struggled to draw visitors and get on sound financial footing.

For the first time, CIMMfest is appealing to the advertising industry by featuring a panel directed weekend’s CIMMfest. Its May 3 CIMMCon panel features “How to Tell Stories across Platforms in the Social Era, Transmedia Storytelling and Brands: Where Media dollars are Moving,” aimed at helping agencies’ transitions.
CIMMfest has grown 30% this year, its sixth, over last year and no one should be surprised to learn that it aims to become the northern SWSW. And well it could, considering that this year’s lineup is jam packed with 165 events — 90 film and 75 live bands and DJs and still counting.
CHICAGO’S BIGGEST AGENCY, Leo Burnett, fittingly starts the New Year news cycle off with two noteworthy achievements. The first: This month the Chicago agency takes over all ad duties for GM’s Chevy Silverado, which had been with Detroit’s recently formed Commonwealth comprised of teams from Omnicom Group and Interpublic.
Burnett will work on both new Silverado and Sierra pickup trucks. The agency’s relationship with General Motors goes back to 19967.
THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER sure got it wrong when it published its July 27 inaugural list of 25 top film schools in the world and egregiously omitting Columbia College –- one of the oldest film schools with largest film enrollment in the country.
TOURISM NARROWS AGENCY CHOICES. The local branches of three foreign-owned ad agencies got the nod from the Illinois Dept. of Commerce and Economic Opportunity as finalists for the $12.5 million Illinois Tourism account. Independents Grant/Jacoby and Hoffman York and Campbell-Mithun’s local office were out.
The finalists are WPP Group shops J. Walter Thompson and Young & Rubicam, and Havas’ Euro RSCG Tatham Partners.
DCEO communications director Laura Hunter will oversee the final reviews with Jan Jostner, Tourism’s deputy director.
BBDO OPTS OUT. BBDO declined to participate in the review for Tourism’s $12 million account. Agency CEO Tonise Paul said “agency resources could be better utilized serving other areas of our business.” But she also predicted BBDO would be back in the travel and tourism business within a year. No count yet of the number of agencies soliciting the business. An announcement will be made in December. FCB and O&M were past Tourism agencies.
