Quietly. Ever so quietly, the deed was done. Not in the dark of night, exactly. But quietly. So as not to disturb any positive thoughts gestating out there about the state of the Chicago advertising industry.
Yeah. Maybe we were guilty of being too distracted by the fun and possibilities attached to the launch of the Pompous Society, a happy way to suggest there is maybe still some life in the old ad business here after all.
We now know which five ad agencies (all in Chicago) have a shot at nabbing the Illinois Lottery account, with the winner expected to be announced in late January.
Those five shops — DDB, DraftFCB, Element 79, Downtown Partners and Young & Rubicam — were tapped to move on from a group of 13 shops that initially submitted proposals a week ago.
For the record, the eight shops that did not make the initial cut are: Euro RSCG/Chicago: Schafer Condon Carter/Chicago; Olson; Gertrude; Blue Chip; Burrell; RPM Advertising and Corn Fed Advertising.

The 23-year-old Indiana Film Office was closed May 6, just 24 hours after its two employees, director Jane Rulon and project manager Chris Pohl, were told their jobs had ended.
The film office will continue, however, although in a different guise, said Michael “Mickey” Maurer, president of the Indiana Economic Development Corp. (IDEC), a quasi-state organization that replaced the Indiana Dept. of Commerce only last January.
It was felt the IEDC could handle the state’s film needs “more efficiently” than in the past, said Maurer.
JWT wins the $12 million Illinois Tourism account, resigned last year by BBDO.
Indie film and spot producer Tim Sabo moved to L.A. to pursue a feature/TV career.
