The Alliance of Independent Representatives (AIR) has announced the winners of its 3rd Annual Unsigned Diverse Directors Showcase, spotlighting emerging talent in the commercial and advertising industry. Among the five winners, two directors from Chicago were recognized for their unique contributions and creative vision: Jorge Arana and ZAPATA.
Jorge Arana
Originally from Mexico City, Arana has over 20 years of experience in live TV production, advertising, and content creation. He is known for crafting visually compelling and emotionally resonant films. His extensive experience across various aspects of media production has honed his ability to tell powerful stories through the lens of a camera, reflecting a deep understanding of cultural narratives and a commitment to authenticity in storytelling.
ZAPATA
With 15 years as a director and editor, has made a name for himself by his commitment to authenticity and diversity. He is particularly noted for his unique approach to working with animals and children in his productions. His dedication to genuine representation makes his work stand out in the competitive field of commercial directing.
This year, the showcase received over 60 submissions from talented directors across the US, all vying for an opportunity to secure commercial representation and connect with top advertising professionals.
The winners, including Jillian Iscaro, Anjali Nayar and Esteban “Steven” Peterson, had their work spotlighted virtually on May 20th for production company executive producers and independent representatives who are members of AIR, as well as ad agency Heads of Production. This event provided a significant platform for the directors to showcase their talents and connect with key industry leaders.
Each winning director will receive an online masterclass and bonus course from Jordan Brady of True Gentleman and Commercial Directing Film School, designed to further enhance their skills and career prospects.
The showcase is organized by AIR’s Diversity In Talent Committee, chaired by Dani Jackson of Smith of The Cre8tors. Committee members include Sonia Blum, Ally Khajenouri, Sarah Gitersonke, and Mary Saxon. This year, the committee partnered with organizations such as ADCOLOR, Free The Work, Black In Film, and Creative Cypher, reinforcing AIR’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in the industry.
The recognition of Jorge Arana and ZAPATA highlights the vibrant and diverse talent emerging from Chicago’s directing scene. Their inclusion in the AIR Unsigned Diverse Directors Showcase underscores the importance of authentic storytelling and the ongoing efforts to foster diversity within the commercial production industry.
