Third season of Netflix ‘Monster’ anthology series to begin filming in Chicago

The third season of Netflix’s Monster anthology series, co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, will begin filming in Chicago on February 10.

This third season, titled The Original Monster, starring Charlie Hunnam who is set to portray notorious serial killer Ed Gein, began filming in October 31, 2024, with production taking place in Los Angeles, California. Additionally, the production is scheduled to film in the Chicago area for 20 days.

Ed Gein, infamously known as the “Butcher of Plainfield,” was a convicted murderer and suspected serial killer active in the 1950s. His gruesome crimes have inspired iconic horror characters such as Norman Bates in Psycho and Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

This season aims to explore Gein’s life as the first celebrity serial killer and examine how true crime evolved into a pop culture phenomenon.

Joining Hunnam in the cast are Laurie Metcalf as Ed Gein’s mother, Tom Hollander as Alfred Hitchcock, and Olivia Williams as Alma Hitchcock, with Carl Franklin returning as director.

Netflix’s Monster, an anthology series that delves into the lives and crimes of notorious criminals, has captivated audiences with its chilling storytelling. Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the series first premiered in September 2022 and has since become one of Netflix’s standout hits.

Monster

The inaugural season, titled Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, focused on the life of Jeffrey Dahmer, the infamous Milwaukee serial killer who murdered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. Starring Evan Peters in the titular role, the series provided a harrowing look into Dahmer’s life, his heinous crimes, and their devastating impact on his victims’ families.

The season sparked widespread debate, drawing both critical acclaim and criticism. Some praised the series for shedding light on systemic failures that allowed Dahmer’s crimes to continue, while others criticized it for potentially re-traumatizing the victims’ families. Despite the controversy, the series was a massive success, becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched shows, with over a billion hours viewed within its first 60 days.

Monster

Following the success of Dahmer, Netflix announced the continuation of the Monster anthology with two additional seasons. Season 2, titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, explores the infamous case of the Menéndez brothers, who were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Kitty Menéndez, in 1989. The case, marked by claims of abuse and a highly publicized trial, continues to spark debate about justice and morality.

With its gripping storytelling and high production value, Monster has cemented its place in the realm of true crime entertainment.

An official release date for the third season has not been announced, but it is anticipated to debut in late 2025.
