Charlie Hunnam cast as infamous serial killer Ed Gein for Monster Season3

Charlie Hunnam Ed Gein Monster

Charlie Hunnam, best known for his role as Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy, will take on the chilling role of notorious serial killer Ed Gein in the upcoming third season of Netflix’s hit anthology series Monster.

The announcement was made by series co-creator Ryan Murphy during a promotional event for Monsters Season 2, which delves into the lives of the Menendez brothers and their infamous murder trial in 1989.

Gein, one of the most infamous killers in American history, became notorious in the 1950s for his gruesome crimes. Not only did “The Plainfield Butcher” kill multiple people in Wisconsin, but he also dug up graves to create macabre items from human remains. Gein’s horrifying case went on to inspire some of the most iconic horror characters in pop culture, including Norman Bates from Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs.

Hunnam’s casting follows his recent work on the upcoming Amazon series Criminal, adding to an already impressive résumé that includes his lead role in Apple TV’s Shantaram and films like Pacific Rim, The Gentlemen, and The Lost City of Z.

Hunnam’s portrayal of Ed Gein is expected to bring another layer of intrigue to the series, which has already gained critical acclaim for its depiction of serial killers, particularly Jeffrey Dahmer in Season 1.

Monster debuted on Netflix in 2022, with its first season receiving praise for Evan Peters’ portrayal of Dahmer, earning him a Golden Globe. Monster Season 2, focusing on the Menendez brothers, will premiere on September 19, with Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch in the lead roles.

Murphy’s latest installment in the Monster anthology series continues to push the boundaries of crime storytelling, combining detailed character studies with dramatic tension. Fans of the series can expect another dark and captivating season as Hunnam steps into the shoes of one of America’s most terrifying killers.

As reported earlier this month, Season 3 will film in the Chicago area for 20 days in late January – early February, 2025.

Monster is an original series, currently streaming on Netflix.
