The Bear will play The Boss in new biopic

Springsteen

Jeremy Allen White, best known for his role as the erratic chef Carmy Berzatto in the hit kitchen drama The Bear, is set to take on an iconic role in a new biopic centered around the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska.

Titled Deliver Me from Nowhere, the film will be written and directed by Scott Cooper, known for his work on Crazy Heart.

Based on Warren Zanes’ non-fiction book of the same name, the biopic will delve into the creative process behind Springsteen’s acclaimed album, which is widely regarded as one of his masterpieces. Nebraska features a stripped-down collection of dark and melancholy songs inspired by down-on-their-luck blue-collar characters, heavily influenced by Terrence Malick’s film Badlands and Howard Zinn’s book A People’s History of the United States.

The album’s recording process was notably rapid, with Springsteen laying down 10 of the songs in one night in January 1982 in his New Jersey bedroom on a four-track cassette. Among these recordings was the demo for Born in the USA, which would go on to become a massive hit when released with the E Street Band two years later.

Springsteen, now 74, remains an influential figure in music and culture, recently becoming the first non-Brit inducted into the Ivors Academy. While he has appeared in films such as High Fidelity and been the subject of documentaries like The Promise and Letter to You, Deliver Me from Nowhere marks the first major biopic about his life and work.

One of the tracks from Nebraska, Highway Patrolman, provided inspiration for the 1991 film The Indian Runner, written and directed by Sean Penn, further highlighting Springsteen’s impact on cinema.
