The Bear sets new comedy record at Emmy Awards

Bear Emmy

At the 2024 Emmy Awards, FX’s The Bear continued its streak of critical acclaim by setting a new record for the most wins by a comedy series in a single season. The series, starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, garnered 23 nominations, surpassing 30 Rock‘s 2009 record. Ultimately, The Bear walked away with 11 wins, including key victories for its cast and crew.

Liza Colón-Zayas made Emmy history by becoming the first Latina to win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Tina Marrero. Her heartfelt acceptance speech noted her disbelief at winning amidst powerhouse nominees like Meryl Streep and Sheryl Lee Ralph. She ended her speech with an inspiring message for Latinas, urging them to believe in themselves and to vote for their rights.

Jeremy Allen White, who plays Carmy Berzatto, secured his second consecutive win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Reflecting on the impact of the show, White shared that The Bear has changed his life and helped foster a sense of faith and community.

Christopher Storer took home the Emmy for Best Directing for the fan-favorite episode “Fishes,” while Ebon Moss-Bachrach won his second Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis also earned awards in guest actor and actress categories during the Creative Arts Emmys.

Despite its success, The Bear didn’t take home the top prize for Best Comedy Series. The honor went to Hacks, starring Jean Smart, marking a surprising end to a night full of records and recognition for the beloved FX series.

The 76th Emmys, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy, aired live from L.A.’s Peacock Theater and continued the conversation on whether The Bear truly fits within the comedy category. Eugene Levy, during the ceremony, humorously addressed this ongoing debate, stating, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”
