“Training Wheels,”
Sanicole cast a
first-time actor
in the lead role.

Filmmaker Sanicole Young traveled an especially challenging road to get to the Black Harvest Film Festival.

It began with the task of completing Training Wheels, a magical and occasionally intense film that premiered on opening night. Besides writing, producing, directing and editing the Chicago-based, family-focused short, Sanicole cast an untested, first-time actor in the lead role.

Luckily, nine-year-old Zuri McPherson turned out to be as likable as she is gifted.

“Zuri is the star of Training Wheels,” Sanicole told Reel Chicago after the film’s debut. “I’m just enjoying the ride.”
