The Chicago Indie Critics (CIC) have announced the winners of their 2023 film awards, recognizing outstanding achievements in cinema.
Boom! It’s Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
The film took home the prestigious Best Studio Film accolade, along with several other significant awards, including Best Director. Celine Song’s Past Lives was honored as the Best Independent Film, earning recognition for Best Original Screenplay and securing Breakout Artist for the talented writer/director.
Key acting categories featured notable winners, with Paul Giamatti receiving Best Actor for his role in The Holdovers, Emma Stone earning Best Actress for Poor Things, Robert Downey Jr. capturing Best Supporting Actor in Oppenheimer, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph achieving Best Supporting Actress for The Holdovers.
In addition to its Best Studio Film recognition, Oppenheimer excelled in technical categories, clinching awards for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Ensemble. Other noteworthy victors include Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for Best Animated Film, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie for Best Documentary, and The Zone of Interest for Best Foreign Film.
The CIC Impact Award was bestowed upon Dennis Scott, the Music Box Theatre organist, while Celine Song claimed the Breakout Artist title for her work on Past Lives. The Sight Unseen Award, spotlighting exceptional performances in unreleased films, was presented to Oscar Isaac for his outstanding contribution to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
