In the episode, veteran police officer Dave Wheelan pulls over a young Black college student on a traffic violation. The situation quickly escalates out of control and ends with a shooting, which officer Wheelan believes is justified but which the video footage reveals is not.
The emotional storyline takes a hard look at the differing perspective of officers and how quickly events can change because of underlying prejudice and lack of empathy.
Protect and Serve was directed by longtime executive producer/director Eriq LaSalle and will mark his final episode with Chicago P.D.
Ruzek and Atwater are tasked with making an arrest after a high-profile shooting. The situation becomes complicated when it’s clear someone doesn’t want them to make it back to the district. Guest stars include Nicole Ari Parker, Michael Rispoli, Cleveland Berto and Shawn Tyrone Roundtree, Jr.
