Charlie Hunnam has earned the first Emmy nomination of his career for his performance in the Netflix series Monster: The Ed Gein Story, filmed in several Illinois communities.
The Television Academy nominated Hunnam for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his portrayal of the notorious Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein. The nomination marks a career milestone for the actor following decades of acclaimed television and film work, including his starring role in Sons of Anarchy.
Hunnam is nominated alongside Riz Ahmed, Jason Bateman, Oscar Isaac and Matthew Rhys in one of this year’s most competitive acting categories.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story received a total of seven Emmy nominations overall. In addition to Charlie Hunnam’s first career nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor, Laurie Metcalf recieved a nomination for Supporting Actress, and the series also earned nominations for cinematography, period costumes, prosthetic makeup and sound mixing.

After beginning production in Los Angeles, Monster: The Ed Gein Story filmed in the Chicago area and extensively in surrounding Illinois communities, with local cast, crew and locations helping recreate 1950s Wisconsin.
Reel Chicago first reported the Netflix production’s arrival, as the Ryan Murphy series transformed neighborhoods in historic small town locations across the region, including Pullman, Momence, Saunemin, and Woodstock into the world of Ed Gein.
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented on September 14, when the winners will be announced.
