Is it a Nerf commercial or a… ahem… grooming ad? For a few glorious seconds, the answer could go either way. Then somebody crashes a funeral. “Go Nutso,” our Reel Ad of the Week, is a 60-second spot for The Lawn Mower Go, MANSCAPED’s most affordable trimmer for groin and body hair.
Writer-directors Zach Shenouda and Ryan Robinson, working as Zach & Ryan, gave it the look and volume of a ’90s toy commercial. If you grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, your ears may still be ringing.
It starts with two guys working out in a park and wondering if it’s time to shave down there. In come the Go Nutso guys, a crew in matching blue-and-orange uniforms who look like they’ve been waiting all day for someone to ask. Soon there’s a water balloon fight, some backflips and a funeral that takes a turn nobody put in the program. Keep an eye on the fine print. It’s having almost as much fun as the guys in uniform. What makes the spot work is how seriously it commits to the bit. That old toy-commercial energy makes an awkward grooming conversation feel like the most urgent thing on television. And every time you think the joke has peaked, the spot finds another gear. By the time it gets to the funeral, you’re mostly impressed it had the good sense to start in a park.
Zach & Ryan first teamed up with MANSCAPED as USC film students through the brand’s Maker’s Network, which supports emerging creators. They went on to make “Post Pic Clarity,” which MANSCAPED calls its most viral piece of content to date. “Go Nutso” debuted on the brand’s Instagram and TikTok, with wider U.S. digital distribution expected.
