For six decades, Chicago-based Kartemquin Films has helped shape the landscape of documentary filmmaking, producing and supporting films that have earned international recognition while chronicling stories of social change, community, and the human experience.
Founded in 1966 by Gordon Quinn, Stan Karter and Jerry Temaner, Kartemquin celebrates its 60th anniversary this year as one of the nation’s longest-running documentary production organizations. From its beginnings on Chicago’s North Side, the nonprofit has built a reputation for observational filmmaking and cinematic storytelling that has influenced generations of documentary filmmakers.
Among Kartemquin’s most acclaimed productions are Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters, Life Itself, Minding the Gap, Stevie, The Last Pullman Car and Home for Life. Collectively, the organization’s films have received Academy Award nominations, Emmy Awards, Peabody Awards, Sundance honors and numerous other national and international recognitions.
Much of Kartemquin’s identity has been shaped by Gordon Quinn, who co-founded the organization and served for decades as its Executive Director before transitioning to Artistic Director and, more recently, Senior Adviser. Under his leadership, Kartemquin developed a distinctive approach to documentary filmmaking centered on long-form, observational storytelling and stories that explore the complexities of everyday life.
