Jesse Spencer returns to Chicago Fire!

This is not a drill, Jesse Spencer is returning to Chicago Fire in episode 18 Danger is all Around. A fellow actor inadvertently spilled the beans by sharing behind the scenes selfies on his Instagram, tagging Spencer and Miranda Rae Mayo in the photo.

The post was quickly edited and the photo was taken down, but not before it was saved and shared across the internet on all social media platforms. Even though the photo isn’t on that post any longer, the comments show that there was a photo of Spencer in that carousel:

As the photo spread across the internet like wildfire, Variety confirmed Spencer’s return.

Spencer left Chicago Fire after 10 years and 200 episodes in 2021 when his character made a “life-altering decision” to move to Oregon with a three-year commitment, which led to him being written off of the series. The character Matt Casey decided the episode prior that he was going to leave Chicago to look after the Darden boys, the young sons of his fallen comrade.

During the episode Two Hundred, Casey told Brett (Kara Killmer) that he has to move to Oregon, and asked that she come with him. She was taken aback by the news, and threw out the possibility of them splitting up, but the couple ultimately agreed to stay together to attempt a long-distance relationship.

The 200th episode mostly focused on Casey’s departure and how it would impact the rest of the characters.

In the Season 10 finale, Spencer came home to Station 51 to attend the wedding of Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).

Even though writer, producer, and showrunner Derek Haas is leaving Wolf Entertainment at the end of the season, at the time of Spencer’s departure, he wanted to keep the door open for Spencer to return for more episodes and said during a press conference, “We’re going to keep it alive.… This is a three-year commitment that Casey’s making but hopefully we’ll see him before those three years are done.”

In the meantime Jesse Spencer was cast in a Disney+ Australian series titled Last Days of the Space Age which has completed filming their 8 episode season. It is unclear at this time if this will be one episode or a story arc. Taylor Kinney‘s character Kelly Severide was written off the series in Episode 15 Damage Control which aired on March 1, in order to cover for Kinney taking a sudden temporary leave of absence. So anything is possible!

Episode 18 Danger is all Around is expected to air on April 5.

Chicago Fire is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Wolf Entertainment. Filmed at Cinespace Chicago Film Studio.
