Jesse Spencer comes home to Firehouse 51 for Chicago Fire finale

Jesse Spencer will officially be back at Firehouse 51 for the Chicago Fire season 10 finale.

Last season when Jesse Spencer announced that he was leaving the show, we suspected that he would be back as Best Man for the wedding of Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).

The showrunners Derek Haas and Andrea Newman have confirmed that Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) is coming home, and we will see him reunite with Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) as they attend the wedding, but before the wedding takes place, Casey makes a must-stop at Firehouse 51.

Jesse Spencer

“Jesse Spencer so understands the character — and especially the relationship that Casey has with Severide, the bond of that friendship — and he knew the character had promised to be there at the wedding as the Best Man,” Chicago Fire co-showrunner Andrea Newman tells PEOPLE. “Jesse is just like Casey: he’s a man of his word and he was going to make it happen. He is completely connected to the character in that way.”

The season finale begins filming the week of May 2. The wedding will be filmed on May 9.

Of course nothing ever goes smoothly with Severide and Kidd so we can expect a few bumps when it comes to the nuptials.

“We make it so that the wedding doesn’t happen when it was planned,” Haas tells Parade. “Whatever plans they might have had for a future wedding all gets pulled up.”

“We’re not saying it’s not going to happen,” added Newman, who wrote the episode. “There’s plenty of wrenches that are thrown at it that make them have to adapt and twist and turn and figure out if they’re going to be able to pull it off at all.”

Haas tells Variety, “The wedding is not going to go as planned. Plus, there’ll be at least one surprise guest at the wedding besides Jesse. It became a matter of how many people could we get in one day availability-wise, so we put together a wish list.” Newman adds, “We had kind of endless wish list that went on pages, but that being said, we also have all these twists and turns in the wedding itself. People that we wanted to get there might might not make it.”

Haas tells Variety that despite past shocking storylines on “Chicago Fire,” this is the “top finale” they’ve ever done. “You’re going to have all of your emotions. Have some tissues handy and not even in the end — in the first 10 minutes, it’s gonna get gnarly.”

Chicago Fire’s season 10 finale will air on NBC Wednesday, May 25, at 9 p.m. ET.
