Slated to film in Chicago, America Ferrera will make her feature directorial debut in I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.
The film is in development at Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures. It was previously set up at Netflix, which is no longer attached.
Screenwriter Linda Yvette Chávez wrote the script, based on Erika Sánchez’s #1 bestselling YA novel of the same name.
The story follows Julia Reyes, a teen with dreams of becoming a famous writer and leaving her traditional Mexican immigrant parents in Chicago. They wish she was more like her sister Olga, who was killed in a tragic accident and is now eternally perfect. Julia sets out on a mission to find out if Olga really was as perfect as everyone thought. In her search, she stumbles across more shocking family truths than she ever expected, and gains a deep understanding of the wounds her family carries.
Producers include Doreen Wilcox Little, Macro Film Studios’ Charles D. King and Poppy Hanks, Aevitas Creative Management’s David Kuhn, and Anonymous Content. Erika Sánchez and Macro Film Studios Greta Talia Fuentes will executive produce the picture.
This will mark Ferrera’s first time directing a feature movie. She has previously directed episodes of the NBC comedy Superstore, that she also produced and starred in. Ferrara is known for her role in Barbie, for which she he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her acting credits include Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Real Women Have Curves and Ugly Bettie.
I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is currently in active development with no start date as of yet.
