Season 1 of Chicago-made The Emperor of Ocean Park is now streaming on MGM+.
The series filmed on the stages at Chicago Studio City last summer through October, and is now available on MGM+ with new episodes airing on Sundays at 9:00pm CT through September 15.
Based on Stephen L. Carter’s best-selling novel, The Emperor of Ocean Park is set in the worlds of politics, Ivy League academia, and the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard. Talcott Garland (Grantham Coleman) is a professor whose quiet life is shattered when his father, Judge Oliver Garland (Forest Whitaker), dies of an apparent heart attack. The nature of his death is questioned by Tal’s sister (Tiffany Mack) who believes that the judge met with foul play.
The Emperor of Ocean Park is a scripted series written by Sherman Payne (Shameless.) Payne co-produced with John Wells Productions and Warner Brothers. Damian Marcano, Cheryl Dunye directed. Llewelyn Wells, brother of John Wells, was Executive Producers. Christina Varotsis co-produced.

Judge Oliver Garland (Forest Whitaker)
The family patriarch and a powerful presence in the national political scene, he is sharp, strategic, and dignified. As a Black man in America, he has had to maneuver through unwelcoming and frequently antagonistic environments, developing a tough exterior that serves as his armor. A dedicated father, his devotion to his family both strengthens and challenges his firmly held conservative values.
Talcott Garland (Grantham Coleman)
A distinguished professor at a prestigious law school, Tal’s tranquil life is upended when his father, Judge Oliver Garland, passes away suddenly. What initially appears to be a straightforward heart attack soon unveils a labyrinth of deceit and hidden agendas. Thrust into a perilous game where the stakes are life and death, Tal must do whatever it takes to uncover the truth and survive.
Mariah Garland (Tiffany Mack)
Mariah, a relentless former journalist now dedicated wife and affluent mother of five, is a passionate pursuer of truth and a steadfast conspiracy theorist. She delves into the circumstances surrounding her father’s death, determined to prove that he, once a promising Supreme Court nominee, fell victim to a sinister plot and met with foul play.
Addison Garland (Henry Simmons)
The eldest of the Garland siblings, Addison is a national media personality and a metropolitan playboy. He grapples with his sense of duty towards his siblings and his devotion to his late father, despite the complexities of their relationship.
Paulina Lule (Kimmer Madison-Garland)
Tal’s wife, Kimmer, is an ambitious and high-powered lawyer on the brink of being appointed to a federal judgeship. Relentless in her pursuit of success, she is willing to manipulate and overlook those around her, including her own husband, to achieve her goals.
Howard Denton (Bryan Greenberg)
Mariah’s husband, and an ultra-rich venture capitalist. When Mariah embarks on her relentless quest to uncover the truth behind her father’s demise, Howard is catapulted into a world of mystery and intrigue against his will.
Claire Garland (Ora Jones)
The matriarch of the Garland family, Claire is a dutiful wife and mother, who may wield far more power and influence than any of her children suspect.
Martina (Novalie Ruth)
A mysterious globe trotter whose frequent run-ins with Tal are far from coincidental. With each encounter, she unveils layers of knowledge, slowly solidifying her role as a central figure in the unfolding drama engulfing the Garland family.
Jack Ziegler (Torrey Hanson)
Known criminal and longtime friend of Judge Garland, Jack has been a close associate of the Garland family for decades.
