Chicago agency creatives are stuck inside from the below-0 temperatures, but that has not stopped them from releasing their spots for the Super Bowl which features the Patriots vs the Rams this Sunday, Feb. 3.
Next up, is Energy BBDO’s fun Kristin Chenoweth spot for Avocados from Mexico. A few weeks ago, Reel Chicago debuted the teasers here. Over the last four years, Avocados From Mexico has told dynamic, funny stories of the healthy fruit’s versatility, seasonality, and health benefits (good fats), all leading up to this year’s overarching umbrella message:
Avocados From Mexico are Always Worth It.
This year’s hilarious (and it is actually hilarious to the Reel Chicago team) spot takes its inspiration from the old David Letterman Show skit, Stupid Human Tricks and blends it with the iconic film, Best in Show to create, “Top Dog.”
And you guessed it – both the online and :30-second spot features the hilarious (and stupid) humans with their pets set at the fictional 53rd Annual Human Canine Show. The dogs proudly watch their humans while they compete for Avocados From Mexico, performing different commands from sit to shake to stay. Chenoweth serves as celebrity host of the Human Canine Show.
Watch the :60-second online spot, which is the brand’s first Super Bowl work from Energy BBDO after winning the account in 2018. Take a look at what directing duo Adam & Dave from Arts & Sciences came up with:

The actress/singer had this to say about the creative, “I think Avocados from Mexico are genius commercials. One thing they did this year that I’m really happy they didm they chose to involve animals. It centers around a dog show. And it involves two of my favorite things – food and dogs.”
She adds, “I have been looking for cool factor moments for my niece and nephew for most of my life. And I think I might have arrived.”
Watch the :30-second spot that will air during the big game:
President and CEO of Avocados from Mexico, Alvaro Luque, had this to say about the anticipated spot, “We loved this concept since the beginning. It has all the elements we wanted. It’s fun. It’s entertaining. But the message was really clear. We’re also very proud to have Kristin because she brought so much personality and experience.”
The brand is also promoting dog adoptions, with partner Adopt-a-Pet, as part of its Super Bowl moment. Using IBM Watson AI technology, people can actually be matched with dogs up for adoption in their area based on answers about “their avocado and lifestyle preferences.” The Onion is also running fictional news about tech existing that allows humans and canines to communicate.
