Chicagoan John Mulaney is David Letterman’s ‘Next Guest’

Emmy winner, Chicagoan, John Mulaney is set to appear this month on a special episode of David Letterman‘s critically acclaimed Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman.

The episode was filmed in Chicago in December at The Den and at Mulaney’s high school.

Growing up in Chicago, Mulaney was an early bloomer in the world of comedy, joining the Chicago-based children’s sketch group The Rugrats at the age of seven. He had an opportunity to audition for the role of Kevin in the iconic film Home Alone, but his parents decided against it.

In addition to his work as a writer and performer on SNL, Mulaney has worked for 21 years as a headliner in stand-up comedy.

Coming off his recent role as the host of the 2025 Oscars, Mulaney joins Letterman in an intimate conversation about fatherhood, stand-up comedy, and addiction. The duo takes a stroll through the halls of Mulaney’s alma mater, St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago, as he shares some of his earliest attempts at humor.

The episode is set to debut on Netflix on April 30. Here’s a sneak peek:

Unlike traditional talk shows, Letterman’s series takes a unique approach by conducting interviews on location, bringing a new depth to his conversations with guests. Previous personalities featured on the show include a diverse group of influential figures such as Billie Eilish, Kevin Durant, Ryan Reynolds, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Smith, Cardi B, Barack Obama, Malala Yousafzai, George Clooney, Jay Z, Tina Fey, and Howard Stern.
