After a long summer hiatus, Chicago P.D. fans finally have something to celebrate. Production on Season 14 is set to begin July 23, marking the first major milestone on the road to the show’s October 7 return on NBC.

The update came from star Marina Squerciati, who revealed on Instagram that she was preparing to head back to work after the break.

“Nothing humbles you like the first workout after a hiatus full of cookies. I start filming in TEN DAYS. I’M NOT PANICKING AT ALL.”

While it’s unclear whether July 23 marks the official first day of production for the entire cast or simply Squerciati’s first day on set, filming is clearly about to get underway.

The start of production also means fans can likely expect a steady stream of behind-the-scenes photos and videos from the cast in the coming weeks, offering the first glimpses of Season 14 after months of waiting.

Season 14 follows one of the longest offseasons in recent memory for Chicago P.D., with the Season 13 finale airing in May and NBC scheduling the new season for an October 7 premiere.

Season 13 left the Intelligence Unit with more questions than answers. Much of the season centered on newcomer Eva Imani (Arienne Mandi), whose search for her long-lost sister became the emotional backbone of the final episodes. What began as a missing-person investigation turned into a devastating revelation when Imani discovered her sister, Shari, had been abducted as a child and raised by her kidnapper, Kirby, whom she believed was her husband.

The finale delivered one final moral dilemma for Hank Voight. After evidence revealed that Shari, not Kirby, had committed a murder while under years of manipulation and abuse, Voight was left to decide whether to follow the law or protect a victim whose entire life had been stolen from her. The season ended before viewers learned his decision, leaving one of the show’s biggest ethical cliffhangers in years heading into Season 14.

Beyond the central mystery, Season 13 also continued the evolution of Burgess and Ruzek’s family life, challenged Torres with increasingly personal cases, and reunited the One Chicago franchises for another crossover event, all while setting the stage for the changes awaiting the Intelligence Unit this fall.

LaRoyce Hawkins

Production also begins during a period of transition for the series. Original cast member LaRoyce Hawkins is expected to return for several episodes to conclude Officer Kevin Atwater’s story before departing the show, giving fans an opportunity to see the character’s farewell play out on screen.

With cameras now rolling, more casting announcements, story teases, and first-look images are expected throughout the summer as NBC gears up for the return of Chicago P.D. this fall.
