Chicago’s busiest television hospital is preparing to reopen its doors. Production on Season 12 of NBC’s Chicago Med is scheduled to begin July 29 in Chicago, with the latest installment of the long-running Dick Wolf drama returning to anchor One Chicago Wednesdays when it premieres Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. New episodes will stream the following day on Peacock.
As one of television’s most recognizable series filmed in Chicago, Chicago Med once again brings cast, crew and production activity back to the city, continuing a run that began in 2015 and has helped establish Chicago as one of the country’s premier television production hubs.
When viewers last left Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, the doctors were facing some of the biggest personal and professional challenges in the show’s history.
The Season 11 finale delivered an emotional milestone as Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) gave birth to a daughter with Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber). But the celebration quickly became complicated when Archer admitted he loved Asher, only to receive no response in return.
Showrunner Allen MacDonald later confirmed that Asher’s silence was intentional, teasing that the emotional fallout will be explored when the series returns.

Hospital administrator Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) also enters Season 12 facing perhaps the greatest threat of her career. After board member Miranda Lewis (Orlagh Cassidy) accused Goodwin of ethical misconduct, the finale ended with Lewis demanding her resignation, setting up what MacDonald has described as a major showdown between the two women.
“Goodwin is going to have to fight to keep her job,” MacDonald told NBC Insider following the finale.
Elsewhere, Gaffney’s doctors continue to navigate the professional and personal relationships that have become a hallmark of the series, including Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt), Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell), Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) and John Frost (Darren Barnet).
Produced entirely in Chicago, Chicago Med remains one of the city’s signature television productions, generating local employment while showcasing Chicago neighborhoods, landmarks and medical institutions as part of the internationally successful One Chicago franchise.
Season 12 premieres Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, followed by Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m.
