Chicago film community mourns the loss of Tom O’Neill

The Chicago film community was devastated by the news of the sudden passing of Assistant Director, Tom O’Neill on January 14th, 2024.

Tom worked as a Second AD and Production Assistant for over 15 years on Chicago films and TV series such as Southside, The Big Leap, Empire, Chicago Fire, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Born on December 24th, 1987, Tom exuded a larger-than-life personality that touched everyone who knew him.

Tom lived in several places in his life’s journey, including Chicago, Glenview, Switzerland, Orlando, and Winnetka. His fascination with film first took root while he attended New Trier High School. It would ultimately becoming his lifelong passion.

Choosing to major in Film at Arizona State University, Tom’s post-graduation days saw him stepping into the world of film and television production in Chicago as a Production Assistant. These early experiences forged lasting friendships, and with unwavering dedication, he earned his place in the Directors Guild of America as an Assistant Director.

Outside of work, Tom found joy in golf, skiing, traveling, playing tennis, and cherishing moments with family and friends. Watching a film with Tom was not just an activity; it was an immersive analysis from countless perspectives. He enriched the lives of those around him in countless ways. Tom’s conversational prowess spanned topics from politics to WWII history, reflecting a mind as engaging as it was diverse. Yet, it was his heart that truly defined him—loving, compassionate, and remarkably thoughtful. Tom’s infectious smile and laughter left an indelible mark, always putting others first in a way that resonated with everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He was truly a blessing to his family, friends, and co-workers.

Upon hearing the news of his passing, his friends and family took to social media to grieve their loss.
