Chicago house music pioneer Nemiah Mitchell Jr ‘Mitchbal’ passes at 79

Chicago’s House Music Pioneer, Nemiah Mitchell Jr, best known as Mitchbal has passed away at the age of 79. Born on the 4th of July in 1944, he was destined to be recognized.

Mitchbal was one of the key originators of Chicago’s House Music back in the early eighties through his very early, and legendary labels, Mitchbal Records and Chicago Connection Records.

With the help of his son, Vince Lawrence, Mitchbal went on to release groundbreaking records with Frankie Knuckles, Z-Factor (Vince Lawrence & Jesse Saunders), Jeanette Thomas, Mr. Lee, Risque Rhythm Team (with K-Alexi), Libra Libra and many others — effectively paving the way for all the Chicago House music labels such as Trax, Dj International, and many others.

Without Mitchbal, there would not have been House Music in Chicago as we know it today.
