Zacuto’s Z-Finder EVF a “game changer”

DSLR capability is about to change again. Zacuto owners Steve Weiss and Jens Bogehegn developed the Zacuto Z-Finder EVF, what they call the “key to having the DSLR camera in-line with your rod system.”

“We’re going to change the game, again,” say product designers Weiss and Bogehegn. “We’ve been working on the EVF for the past six months.”

The Z-Finder EVF transforms the form factor of DSLR cameras for video use. The 3.2-inch high resolution monitor allows the eye to be in the EVF, and the camera to be in line with the camera’s rod system.

“This is the way all film cameras and ENG video cameras have been operated,” says Weiss, “and this is an obstacle DSLR technology has had to overcome — the lack of video ergonomic design as found with film and ENG video cameras.”

The EVF was developed by Weiss, Bogehegn and engineer Bob Zajeski, with electronic engineers The Real Time Group, headed by Marshall Wenrich and Charles Krebs.

“This is a ground-up design, completely designed, funded and produced by Zacuto USA,” said Weiss. All the mechanicals and tooling are done in Chicago and aluminum components are made in the suburbs.

Ten prototypes will be given to select Hollywood and indie film DPs. Zacuto will start taking deposits in December for shipment of a limited EVF supply in February, at an estimated price of $775.
