Zacuto to challenge 35mm in DSLR shootout

The great DP Philip Bloom of London, considered the world’s foremost Video DSLR shooter and evangelist of DSLR low-budget filmmaking, arrives in Chicago Sunday to participate in the first-ever shootout pitting new DSLR cameras against traditional 35mm.

The Feb. 1-4 evaluation is being conducted by Zacuto, makers of camera accessories, in association with Resolution Digital Studios and Filmworkers Club.

Zacuto partner Steve Weiss proclaims photographic style Video DSLRs as “a revolution in cameras, the biggest industry game changer since HD.” Recognizing their potential early on, Zacuto began adding Canon and Nikon DSLR to their inventory in April, 2008 after the DSLRs first zoomed into the camera market.

Weiss is not alone in his enthusiasm for the new products. Zacuto producer Scott Lynch, who is producing the shootout and a subsequent video, notes that network TV shows, like “24” and “House” are experimenting to the new format and that the steady of inquiries comes in from notable Hollywood DPs and studio producers.

Now Zacuto wants to cinch DSLR’ low-cost, high quality delivery with the shootout at RDS on Tuesday.

DPs Bloom and Zacuto partner Jens Bogehegn will shoot two scenes with six DSLRs — Canons 1Dmark4; 4, 5Dmark2 and 7D; Nikons D3S and D300S; a Panasonic GH1 — and an Arri 435.
