Chicago Med star Yaya DaCosta, known for her role as April Sexton, revealed that she would consider a return to the series with one condition.

After leaving the series in Season 6, DaCosta briefly reprised her role in Season 8. It remains uncertain whether she will make further appearances in the future. However, in a recent interview with TV Insider, the actress disclosed that if April were to return, it should be as a doctor.

DaCosta emphasized that April helped her brother with his education and she always expected her to complete her own journey, reflecting on the entire arc of April’s storyline.

DeCosta said, “I think the idea was always that we would kind of tap into some woman’s empowerment and now that he was all set, go back to her fulfilling her dream, and I guess just as time went on, everyone was comfortable seeing her as a nurse. The way that she was in the hospital, the way that she interacted with the patients, the wisdom that she brought to the cases, the way that the doctors could trust her to just finish their sentences and start doing what was needed before they’re even asked, I think that kind of gave her a lot of credibility and expectation that she would be a doctor. So if ever in this or any other dimension, April Sexton were to return to screen, it would have to be as a doctor.”

Chicago Med, created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead, has been captivating audiences since its premiere on NBC in 2015, focusing on the lives and relationships of the emergency department staff at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. DaCosta’s character, April Sexton, made the decision to leave Chicago Med after Season 6 to pursue a nurse practitioner program.

April has been a prominent character throughout most of Chicago Med, and her relationship with Ethan Choi (played by Brian Tee) has been a significant storyline. While their story seemed to conclude, with April confessing her difficulty in moving on during the Season 6 finale after Ethan got shot, DaCosta’s character made a comeback in Season 8, reuniting with Ethan. The couple purchased a mobile clinic to expand their patient care, and their journey reached a positive note with their marriage.

Considering the nature of the One Chicago franchise, cameo appearances from characters can be expected, as seen with Torrey DeVitto’s Natalie Manning in the season finale. With this in mind, it remains possible for April to return to Chicago Med in the future.

While April’s story may have concluded, there is room to speculate on ways the show could bring her character back. It would be intriguing to see DaCosta’s character take on a more significant role, particularly given her previous contributions at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. The return of April as a doctor would undoubtedly excite fans of Chicago Med who have followed her character’s development over the years.
