Will there be a One Chicago crossover this season?

Since the last One Chicago crossover event in 2019, fans have been eagerly waiting for a new challenge that brings together Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med in a unified storyline.

The 2019 crossover, titled Infection, involved all three teams responding to a bioterrorism threat, seamlessly linking the episodes across the shows. However, there have been no similar events in recent years due to a number of complications.

After 2019, the pandemic caused significant disruptions in TV production. COVID-19 restrictions made it difficult to bring together large casts for crossover events because of health and safety protocols. These restrictions continued to be an obstacle for several years, preventing the production of the multi-show events that fans love.

In 2023, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused additional delays, shortening the One Chicago seasons and leaving less time to coordinate a large-scale crossover. With fewer episodes and tighter schedules, the production teams had to prioritize completing regular episodes, making a crossover logistically impossible.

With these setbacks behind us, the possibility of a crossover in the 2024-2025 season is being discussed. Gwen Sigan, the showrunner for Chicago PD, has confirmed that there are ongoing conversations about how to make it happen.

“There are always talks.” Chicago P.D. Showrunner, Gwen Sigan told TVLine regarding a three-way crossover. “It will just be about if it all aligns and works out. But yeah, hopefully.”

The challenge now lies in aligning filming schedules, cast availability, and production costs, which have become a concern for NBC. The network is currently trying to reduce production expenses, making it harder to justify a costly crossover event that requires more coordination and resources.

While nothing is confirmed yet, there is optimism that a crossover will occur this season if the logistics fall into place. Fans are hopeful that this long-awaited event will finally come to fruition, especially with the potential for new character interactions that haven’t been seen before, given the many cast changes across the shows since 2019.

The shows have a full 22 episodes this season so a crossover does look hopeful.
