The Writers Guild of America East (WGA East), in partnership with the Illinois AFL-CIO and the Chicago Federation of Labor, will host an Immigration Response Training later this month to equip workers with practical information and tools amid heightened uncertainty across Illinois workplaces and communities.
The training will take place on Tuesday, January 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. CT, and will be available both in person and virtually via Zoom. The in-person session will be held at the Chicago Laborers’ District Office, 999 McClintock Drive, Burr Ridge.
Organizers say the event comes in response to an increase in Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity across the state over the past year, including reported actions in workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods that have created fear and confusion for many working families.
“As union members, we understand that when one worker is singled out or scapegoated, it affects us all,” the WGA East said in announcing the training. “Solidarity across race, background, and immigration status is essential to the strength of the labor movement.”
The session will provide clear, actionable guidance on workers’ rights and immigration rights, with a particular focus on how to respond if ICE appears at a workplace. While the program will include information specific to Illinois statutes, organizers note that the training will also be relevant to workers and union members in other states.
Guild members are encouraged to attend either in person or remotely, with separate RSVP options available for each format.
The training reflects a broader effort by labor organizations to ensure workers are informed, prepared, and supported, particularly during moments when enforcement actions can disrupt workplaces and communities alike.
Organizers say the goal is not only education, but collective readiness. “Standing together strengthens our labor movement,” the announcement states. “We look forward to seeing you at this important training.”
