Reeling39 fest will have vaccine policy for theater screenings

Reeling39: The 39th Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival opens on September 23 at the Music Box Theatre and runs September 24 – 30 at the Landmark Century Centre Cinemas and virtually from September 27 – October 7.

Boasting 42 shows including 33 feature films and 9 short film programs, this year’s festival includes films from more than 15 countries including Israel, Turkey, Iran, Australia, Italy, Romania, and Chile.

Now in its 39th year, Reeling is the second-oldest LGBTQ+ film festival in the world and a beloved Chicago cultural institution.

Reeling is welcoming audiences to enjoy Reeling39 screening in theaters again, in addition to hosting screenings online. 

To protect the health and safety of the audiences, volunteers, staff, families and the community, they have updated their Covid-19 policy to require proof of full vaccination or a negative Covid-19 PCR test result to attend all screenings and events at the Music Box or Landmark Theaters. Full vaccination means two weeks after the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or single dose of Johnson & Johnson. Regardless of vaccination status, masks will be required to enter festival theaters and must remain on except when actively eating or drinking in your seat.

Beginning now, you will need one of the following items to for admittance to Reeling39 in-theater screenings:

  • Physical vaccination card 
  • Photo of vaccination card
  • Digital vaccination card
  • Negative COVID-19 PCR test result (within 48 hours of screening)
  • A Photo ID may be requested

If you have already purchased a theater ticket but are unable to comply with this updated policy, please contact Reeling at reelingcustomerservice@gmail.com for a refund. Any theater tickets purchased after August 30th are not eligible for refunds if the purchaser is unable to comply. Ticket holders who come to the festival without one of the items listed above will not be allowed entry and are not eligible for a refund.

Please note that Reeling39 has implemented required safety precautions and protocols to reduce the transmission of Covid-19. These measures do not eliminate the inherent risk of potential exposure to Covid-19 in public spaces. By visiting Reeling39 host theaters, you voluntarily assume all risks associated with exposure to Covid-19.

If you do not feel comfortable attending in-person or cannot comply with the new policy, Reeling is offering the festival virtually. Films will be available to stream online starting September 27th through October 7th!
