Tyler Perry in town filming legal drama Mea Culpa

Mea Culpa, written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry, will be seen filming in the Chicago area next week.

The legal drama starring Kelly Rowland will begin filming on March 5 for several days in various Chicago locations on the near north and near west side. Filming will continue at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

Mea Culpa centers around a criminal defense attorney who, in the hope of becoming partner, takes on the case of an artist who may or may not have murdered his girlfriend, making for a complicated final case to secure her future. Kelly Rowland will play the attorney.

Rowland is a Grammy and Billboard Music Award winner best known for teaming with Beyoncé and Michelle Williams to found the girl group Destiny’s Child. She’s previously appeared in films including The Curse of Bridge HollowBad HairThink Like a Man and Freddy vs. Jason.

Roland will produce along with Angi Bones and Will Areu.

The film, also starring Trevante Rhodes (Bruiser, Bird Box), Sean Sagar (The Gentlemen), Nick Sagar (The Princess Switch) and RonReaco Lee (Nappily Ever After), is the next project under Perry’s massive overall deal at Netflix.

Mea Culpa will mark Perry’s fifth Netflix feature following Six Triple EightA Fall From GraceA Madea Homecoming, A Jazzman’s Blues and Adam McKay’s end-of-the-world comedy Don’t Look Up.

Tyler Perry, who is no stranger to Chicago, is a film and TV powerhouse with a long history of contributing to TV and championing inclusion on set. He was awarded the Governor’s Award at the 2020 Emmys.
