Tribeca screening for local indie

A Chicago-made indie film screened at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival last week. “Boricua,” a story about a diverse array of characters living in Humboldt Park and centered around the Puerto Rican Day parade, was produced by Samantha Sanders and written and directed by Marisol Torres. Both teach film at Columbia College.

“We finished the film only days before the festival,” said Sanders. “Since our film is an urban story, we were happy to premiere the film in such a diverse city like New York and build word-of-mouth about the film among the Latino community.

“It’s great to be able to show a film that’s set in a community in Chicago that people outside of Chicago don’t necessarily know exists,” Sanders said. The film was shot on 50 locations and has a cast of nearly 50 “and was made for no money.”

They hope to screen at the New York Latino Fest this summer and find theatrical distribution. If not, Sanders said, “we will self-distribute and look for a home video deal.”
