For Hispanic Heritage Month, Total Wireless is giving some of its biggest media real estate to the people who usually never get it: local small business owners.
In Chicago, that means Tamale Mami.
The neighborhood tamale business is one of more than a dozen Hispanic-owned companies featured in “Tu Número Unlimited,” a new campaign from Total Wireless and the community that turns the brand’s national media buy into advertising for local entrepreneurs.
The idea is built around a simple truth: for many small business owners, a personal cell phone isn’t just a phone. It’s the storefront, booking system, customer service line and lifeline.
So instead of talking about connectivity in the abstract, Total Wireless is using its own media to help those businesses connect with more people.
Across Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Dallas, the campaign includes more than 380 hyper-local placements across digital billboards, radio and social, all tailored to individual businesses and neighborhoods.
In Chicago, Tamale Mami gets the same kind of visibility usually reserved for much larger advertisers.

For Tamale Mami, seeing the business suddenly appear across Chicago was an emotional milestone. “I’m so grateful to share that Tamale Mami is being featured by Total Wireless in locations throughout Chicago as part of their Hispanic Heritage Month campaign supporting Hispanic small-business owners,” the business shared on Facebook.
“Seeing my business on this ad honestly feels surreal. I’m just a girl who started making tamales, trying to build something for my family, and somehow this has grown into something I get to share with even more people.”
The post also credited the community that helped Tamale Mami grow, including Heather Holland, Jesse Jay-Will Williams and Little Lulu’s owner Autumn Bastyr, along with family, customers and supporters who ordered food, shared posts or simply spread the word.
“I know I didn’t get here by myself,” Tamale Mami wrote. “I feel incredibly lucky to have people in my corner.”
That reaction gets to the heart of what makes the Total Wireless campaign work.
Rather than simply celebrating Hispanic entrepreneurs in a broad, feel-good way, Total Wireless gives them something concrete: reach. Watch below:

The campaign also reworks each business’s visual identity with artist-designed logos that place the owner’s actual phone number front and center.
QR codes on billboards allow passersby to save the business directly into their contacts, turning outdoor media into something much closer to a lead-generation tool.
Total Wireless stores are also getting involved.
Select locations are being transformed into temporary “Mercadito Local” marketplaces featuring participating entrepreneurs, while some newly activated phones automatically include local business contacts.
Outside Chicago, the campaign features businesses including Ink For You By Me, a mobile tattoo truck in New York; Club Mascota, a pet clothing boutique in Los Angeles; and Con Leche, a coffee cart in Dallas.
That gives the campaign national reach without losing its neighborhood specificity.
The work also extends into video testimonials and hyper-local social content, allowing the featured entrepreneurs to introduce themselves directly to the communities they serve.
It’s a clever inversion of the usual brand formula.
Total Wireless could have made a campaign about supporting local businesses.
Instead, it gave local businesses the campaign.
That’s why “Tu Número Unlimited” is this week’s REEL Ad of the Week.
