Liza Colón-Zayas is giving fans their first real clue about her role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The Emmy-winning star of FX’s Chicago-set hit The Bear has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Spider-Man film, and while details around her character remain under wraps, Colón-Zayas recently offered a brief but intriguing tease.
“I could just say… I play a detective,” Colón-Zayas said in a new interview, while also praising co-stars Tom Holland and Zendaya. She added that the movie is “a darker, deeper Spider-Man.”
That small reveal has already sparked speculation among Marvel and Spider-Man fans.
One possibility being discussed is Jean DeWolff, a police captain and longtime supporting character in Spider-Man comics who has appeared in various adaptations and alternate versions over the years. Given Colón-Zayas’ description of her character as a detective, DeWolff would make sense as a potential fit.
Other fan speculation has pointed to more obscure Marvel characters, though nothing has been confirmed by Sony, Marvel Studios or the filmmakers.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks the next chapter for Holland’s Peter Parker following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which ended with the world forgetting Peter’s identity. According to the film’s reported setup, Peter is fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man while living in a world where his old friends no longer remember him.
The film’s cast includes Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo, with Colón-Zayas joining as one of the franchise’s new faces.
The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose credits include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote the screenplay. Producers include Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Rachel O’Connor, with Louis D’Esposito and David Cain serving as executive producers.
For Colón-Zayas, the role continues a major career run following the success of The Bear, where she plays Tina Marrero, one of the series’ most beloved characters. The Chicago-set restaurant drama has helped bring renewed attention to the city’s food culture, neighborhoods, and working-class creative energy, while also elevating several of its performers into larger film and television opportunities.
Now Colón-Zayas is moving from the world of The Original Beef and fine dining chaos into one of Marvel’s biggest franchises.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to swing into theaters July 31, 2026. The Bear’s final season drops June 25th.
