The Bear breaks Emmy record for Comedy series noms

The Bear-Emmy

While we’ve made our opinion known that The Bear isn’t really a comedy, it is still an outstanding series that we love. And congrats are in order for Christopher Storer, Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and the rest of the cast and Chicago-based crew for earning a record 23 Emmy nominations!

The second season of the hit FX series, which aired in June 2023, has set a new record for Emmy nominations for a comedy series, including Outstanding Comedy Series. This surpasses the previous record of 22 nominations held by NBC’s 30 Rock since 2009. However, the all-time series record of 32 nominations, held by HBO’s Game of Thrones since 2016, remains unchallenged.

Major Nominations for The Bear

In addition to its Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, The Bear garnered significant nods in the acting categories:

  • Lead Comedy Actor: Jeremy Allen White
  • Lead Comedy Actress: Ayo Edebiri
  • Supporting Comedy Actor: Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce
  • Supporting Comedy Actress: Liza Colón-Zayas

The show also received nominations for its directing and writing:

  • Directing: Christopher Storer for “Fishes” and Ramy Youssef for “Honeydew”
  • Writing: Joanna Calo and Christopher Storer for “Fishes”

Guest Comedy Categories

The guest comedy categories were filled with nominations, including mentions for Jon Bernthal (The Punisher, The Walking Dead), Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween), Olivia Colman (The Crown), Berwyn’s Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), and Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3). Notably, Colman and Poulter were the only actors not nominated for the episode “Fishes.”

Comparison with “Succession” and Other Shows

With its substantial number of acting nominations, The Bear nearly matched the records set by Succession in 2022 and 2023, which landed 14 mentions. Previously, the limited series Roots held the record with 13.

Emmy Competition and Viewership Success

In the comedy series category, The Bear will compete against:

  • Abbott Elementary
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm
  • Hacks
  • Only Murders in the Building
  • Palm Royale
  • Reservation Dogs
  • What We Do in the Shadows

Created by Storer, The Bear follows Carmy (White), an award-winning chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to manage his brother’s sandwich shop following his suicide.

Season 3 premiere of The Bear, which dropped on June 22, reached 5.4 million views in its first four days of streaming, marking the best performance for an FX premiere on Hulu and the most-watched season premiere for any scripted series.
