Sony Pictures is set to launch its very first “Wonderverse” immersive entertainment destination next month at the giant Oakbrook Center mall near Chicago.
The 45,000 square-foot indoor space will host a hybrid of physical and immersive multi-media experiences, interactive installations, dynamic attractions, and themed dining.
“Wonderverse is an exciting expansion for Sony Pictures’ growing location-based entertainment experiences,” said Jeffrey Godsick, Sony Pictures EVP of Global Partnerships and Brand Management and Head of Location Based Entertainment. “Experiences like Wonderverse provide audiences the opportunity to enjoy our brands in new ways by immersing themselves in some of their favorite stories.”
Highlights include:
Speed enthusiasts can engage in the adrenaline-pumping “Bad Boys Racing Club,” gaining entry to racing simulators for a high-speed chase through a Miami-inspired skyline, complete with illuminated photo opportunities.
“Uncharted” enthusiasts will step into the shoes of explorers, immersing themselves in a sequence of themed escape rooms with a connected storyline experience — “The Heist,” “The Hunt,” and “The Return.” This adventure will have them actively uncovering hidden treasure, tackling challenges, and fulfilling quests.
“Ghostbusters” enthusiasts will enroll in the “VR Academy” for an opportunity to step into the shoes of a real Ghostbuster. Within this virtual realm, fans can partake in two unique virtual reality experiences. In the “Arena,” they will don proton packs to outsmart and capture spirits, while in “Blitz,” participants will take the driver’s seat of an Ecto hovercraft, engaging in a high-speed race to determine the fastest and most skilled driver.
For “Zombieland” fans, there are dual avenues to delve into at the entertainment hub. The first involves a creative twist on bumper cars, where one car is designated as Patient Zero, and the remaining vehicles must skillfully evade collisions to stay uninfected and avoid succumbing to a fate as a zombie. Subsequently, fans can venture to the arcade experience, “Pacific Playland,” inspired by the dilapidated carnival.
The ultimate adventure awaits in bringing the classic film “Jumanji” to life, as fans are immersed in a virtual reality game. Here, they are tasked with the mission to find a stolen jewel, halt the ominous spread of evil, and successfully reverse a curse, creating a captivating and interactive experience.
The culinary delights at Wonderverse feature themed food and drink options, including a clandestine speakeasy named “The Ghost Trap.” Here, ghostbusters can raise a toast with fellow spirit-catchers in an environment where the paranormal lurks around every corner. Additionally, for a limited time, visitors can indulge in a “21 Jump Street”-themed pop-up bar experience. Attendees will embark on a nostalgic journey back to school, engaging in cocktail chemistry or participating in an art class for a delightful “paint and sip” night.
“The Commissary Bar,” under the guidance of Pernod Ricard’s mixologist Jane Danger, is set to delight patrons with a selection of specialty cocktails and mocktails, accompanied by light bites. Meanwhile, “Commissary Restaurant,” led by seasoned chef Scott Donaldson, will tantalize taste buds with a comprehensive menu offering a diverse range of culinary delights.
Guests can preview “Wonderverse” starting December 2023 ahead of the official opening in January 2024. Entry is free, with attractions “priced for all to enjoy,” Sony said. “Wonderverse” will become an adult-only experience at 8 p.m.
“We’re thrilled to be the first location for Sony Pictures Entertainment’s ‘Wonderverse’ and have it as our largest entertainment option,” said Tim Geiges, Senior General Manager of Oakbrook Center. “We often hear from guests how they love our mix of entertainment, so we’re excited to offer a completely new experience for them to enjoy, especially as we approach the colder months.”
Previews begin in December 2023 ahead of the official January 2024 opening, with tickets and more information available at the Wonderverse website.
