Sonixphere’s Master Class with virtuoso percussionist

Multi-ethnic percussionist Kalyan Pathak

Last fall, Sonixphere’s Greg Allan invited Chicago musicians over to his River East studio for an evening of food, drink and talk followed by some jamming afterwards by guests on Sonixphere’s full range of musical instruments.

“The evening have been such fun and held nice surprises for the guests that we’ve been holding them every few months ever since,” says Sonixphere executive producer Ken Kolasny.

For the fourth Master Class, as Sonixphere now calls the jams, this Thursday, April 12 at Sonixphere’s studio, Allan invited versatile musician and recording artist Kalyan Pathak, who often composes for Sonixphere.

He is also a drummer, a percussion player and one of the busiest virtuoso tabla and multi-ethnic percussionists in the country.

Pathak will take guests on a colorful rhythmic journey of Indian drums, such as Dhol, Nekkara, Chanda, Tabla, Duff, Manjeera and many more hand and stick percussion, while demonstrating infectious Tala grooves to joyful dance beats in many different songs and music styles.

A native of India, Pathak came to Chicago in 1991 on a full scholarship from Roosevelt University, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies with honors.  He then studied African, Afro-Cuban, Latin and Middle Eastern genres of percussion from various masters in the US.

Pathak also is busy performing, collaborating and touring with many famous international artists in different genres.

The fun starts at 6 p.m. at Sonixphere’s studio at 445 E. Ohio.  RSVP to info@sonixphere.com.  “Feel free to bring a few friends or colleagues,” Kolasny says.
