Reel Black Filmmakers & CFWC host Filmmakers Meet and Create Workshop

Calling all creatives!! Reel Black Filmmakers is looking for you!!

On Saturday, May 27 from Noon-4pm, Reel Black Filmmakers and the Community Film Workshop of Chicago (CFWC) will be hosting its second, in-person Filmmakers Meet and Create Workshop at Harris Park, 6200 S. Drexel Avenue headquarters of the CFWC.

“Over the past 11 years, Reel Black Filmmakers has empowered Black filmmakers. Our quarterly meetings continue with another Meet and Create Workshop. We had a very successful workshop last year, and several unique projects were created,” explains documentary filmmaker Derek Grace, a founding member of Reel Black Filmmakers and lead instructor with the Community Film Workshop of Chicago.

At the Meet and Create Workshop, filmmakers are divided into groups and asked to create short stories. Within four hours, the stories are developed, shot, edited, and screened. This can involve casting actors, scouting locations, designing sets, and creating storyboards to plan out shots.

Margaret Caples, executive director of the Community Film Workshop of Chicago, states, “This is an opportunity to enrich yourself and others. It gives each filmmaker the potential to use what you have right now to create a new film. Growth and empowerment are on the other side of the group effort.”

Grace adds, “As a result of creating unique, inspiring films, Meet and Create participants become more confident as filmmakers.”

The Filmmakers Meet and Create Workshop is free and open to the public.
