“Public Enemies” a friend to the state

It’s official: The actual economic benefits of “Public Enemies” filming in the state were made known today, a full year after production ended.

According to the Illinois Film Office, the Universal Studios movie, directed by Chicago native Michael Mann, spent $46.7 million, and had a 2.5 trickle down impact of $116.75 million on the general economy.

The blockbuster movie, also written by Mann, and starring Johnny Depp as bank robber John Dillinger and Christian Bale as his FBI nemesis, Melvin Purvis, started filming for approximately 40 days in February of 2008 and finished last June.

The IFO reported a local cast and crew of 1,052 were hired and extras numbered 1,786.

Produced by Universal Studios, the budget is estimated at $80 million.

Chicago locations filmed for the movie included Victory Gardens/Biograph Theatre (where in July, 1934, FBI agents killed John Dillinger, played by Johnny Depp) the Bridgeview Bank, the Auditorium Theatre and Union Station.

Locations in the state included a house on Arch Court in Joliet, a bluff overlooking a Lockport train yard, the Palos Hills Forest Preserve in Willow Springs, the Joliet Correctional Center, Stateville Prison in Crest Hill, and the Paramount Theater in Aurora.
