Obama’s Higher Ground to film crime thriller in Chicago

Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions and Netflix have secured a significant mid-six figure spec deal for Dyersville, a true-story crime thriller to be set in Chicago.

According to Deadline, Dyersville was sought-after by five potential buyers. Will Hettinger wrote the script, and Grant Singer is set to direct. This will be the first feature film for Hettinger who was a staff writer on the Netflix series Painkiller.

While details of the plot remain confidential, the story unfolds in the Obamas’ former hometown of Chicago. Vinnie Malhotra and Mark Wright from Higher Ground will serve as producers for the project.

The film is currently in pre-production.

Higher Ground and Netflix have partnered on a number of films, most recently Leave the World Behind and Rustin. Barack Obama won his fifth Emmy, taking home a statuette for outstanding narration for his Netflix documentary series Working: What We Do All Day.

This is a developing story. More details to come.
