New DVD-on-Demand a boon for indies

Tod Lending is delighted to be selling his library of acclaimed documentaries on Fetcher Media, a new DVD-on-Demand service that mini-launched Wednesday in conjunction with the airing of Lending’s latest doc, “The Principal,” over national PBS.

Fetcher Media was developed for the cost-effective sale, video downloads and fulfillment of DVDs and CDs by Lauralyn Farwell, president of Gabriel Media Group.

“This is a great way for independent filmmakers to go about selling their work,” says Lending, who has seven titles he will be listing for sale.

“I’ve been looking for a way to distribute my work like this, and I like the fact that with Fetcher, I can depend on someone to both create the DVDs and fulfill the orders, without my having to get involved,” he says.

“We manufacture physical products only when customers order. No pre-built inventory is needed,” explains Farwell, who worked at duplication and replication giant Allied Vaughn for more than three years and more recently as Pixel Brothers’ VP/media services.

She has spent more than a year on Fetcher Media’s development.

“Through our service, we distribute your DVDs and CDs at a fraction of the cost of other distribution outlets,” she says.

“With our low-cost setup fees, we’re able to give filmmakers a quick ROI, so they’re receiving revenue from their content within 90 days.”

Whereas Amazon/Createspace takes a 55% royalty fee, Fetcher offers a 30% standard distribution fee to filmmakers.

Fetchermedia.com uses a Media On Demand Distribution (MODD) system that allows for DVD and CD manufacture and distribution on demand when customers order.

“This means no pre-built inventory is needed, so Fetcher becomes a perfect solution for low volume, niche content libraries and specialty video and audio,” Farwell notes.

In addition to handling manufacture, at Allied Vaughan, Fetcher does the wrap, handles the merchant account and pays monthly royalties.

“I feel like a pioneer,” says Lending, whose library of seven important titles will be available for sale on Fetcher Media. “This system is a great way for independent filmmakers to go. I’m real excited to see how it will work.”
