Justine Nagan, AmDoc POV new executive director/EP

After three years as Kartemquin’s executive director and executive producer, Justine Nagan has joined American Documentary, Inc. (AmDoc), New York as executive director and executive producer of “POV (Point of View),” its award-winning documentary series on PBS.

Nagan will oversee all aspects of AmDoc|POV’s programs and operations, including production and programming, community engagement and education, POV Digital, development, business affairs, communications and overall management of the POV series.

Nagan will split her time between AmDoc|POV and Kartemquin Films this fall to ensure a smooth transition. She will relocate to New York with her family in December.

“I am thrilled to help lead one of America’s premier media organizations into its next chapter,” she says.

Nagain also will be executive producer of “America ReFramed,” a year-round showcase of independent documentaries featuring contemporary American stories that airs on the WORLD Channel.

Nagan succeeds Simon Kilmurry, who recently joined the International Documentary Association as executive director after 16 years with AmDoc|POV.

Nagan says she is sad to leave Kartemquin on the eve of its 50th anniversary celebrations in 2016, but is “confident the organization is in an incredibly strong position to continue its role as a leader in documentary production.”

Says Kartemquin Films co-founder and Artistic Director Gordon Quinn: “We wish Justine well in the new challenges that she is taking on. Under her leadership, the organization has significantly expanded its programs to assist documentary filmmakers, and seen unprecedented levels of production and financial growth.

“In 2014 we had an unprecedented six projects world premiere, completed the ambitious 6-hour series Hard Earned for Al Jazeera America, and currently have 14 projects in production.”

Adds Kartemquin board chair Adrianne Furniss, “While we are proud of Justine and will miss her, she leaves Kartemquin in great shape, artistically and financially, with a dedicated Board of Directors, who will oversee the transition to a new Executive Director and execution of our plans for the 50th Anniversary.”

During her tenure at Kartemquin, Nagan directed was an executive producer on many of Kartemquin most acclaimed documentaries, including “Life Itself,” “The Interrupters,” “The Trials of Muhammad Ali,” “In the Game, On Beauty” and “Saving Mes Aynak.” .
