Michael Caplan’s “Magical Visions” doc previews; local filmmaker wins national WIF finishing fund

MICHAEL CAPLAN previewed a screening of his documentary, “A Magical Vision,” a portrait of magician, philosopher and “celebrated teacher of the magic arts,” Eugene Berger June 5 at Film Row Cinema.

The film delves into Berger’s approach to magic and its link to shamanistic traditions as well as the work of Berger and his colleagues as innovators in contemporary magic performance.

DP was Chris Peppey, Bryan McHenry provided the animation and motion graphics, Sharon Zurek of Black Cat Films edited.

Sparrow Sound Design’s Bradley Parker-Sparrow and song stylist Joanie Pallatto provided the score.

Caplan, who is associate chair of the Columbia film and video department, produced through his Montrose Pictures and narrates along with directing the film. Caplan says he plans a public premiere in the fall. See http://www.montrosepictures.com

REBECCA SCHANBERG won the national Women in Film Foundation’s 23rd Annual Film Finishing Fund for her in-progress documentary “Do No Harm.”

It is “the incredible and often outrageous story of two men in a small, southern town who endure relentless attacks in order to draw attention to the plight of the uninsured.”

MUSIC BOX FILMS, the year-old distribution company founded by Music Box Theatre owner William Schopf, has acquired all U.S. rights to Guillaume Canet’s French thriller “Tell No One.” The pic garnered top directing and acting prizes in France and enjoyed a successful British run. Music Box releases “Tell No One” in theatres June 27.

Music Box’s second title, the French spy spoof “O.S.S. 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies,” is now in theatres. Last year Music Box released the Mongolian Berlin Film Festival winner “Tuya’s Marriage.” Music Box’s slate includes the gay Argentine drama “La Leon,” and the 60s-set German fashion biopic, “8 Miles High.” See http://www.musicboxfilms.com.
