Global fast-food giant McDonald’s finds itself entangled in the Israeli-Hamas conflict as franchisees in the Middle East express support for either Israeli troops or Palestinians in Gaza via social media.

According to Crain’s Chicago Business story, the issue arose when McDonald’s Israel, an independent business licensed to operate under the McDonald’s brand, announced via its social media accounts that it was providing free and discounted meals to Israel Defense Forces personnel. The Israeli franchise stated that it was donating meals “to all those who are involved in the defense of the state, hospitals, and surrounding areas.”

The decision by McDonald’s Israel came in the wake of a conflict between Israeli forces and the Palestinian militant group, Hamas. The conflict resulted in significant casualties, with approximately 1,300 Israelis killed by Hamas on October 7. In retaliation, Israeli bombardments have since claimed the lives of around 3,000 people in Gaza.

The response to McDonald’s Israel’s announcement has been mixed among the company’s franchisees in predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East. Franchisees in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Turkey have issued statements distancing themselves from the Israeli franchise and, in most cases, expressing solidarity with the people of Gaza.

McDonald’s franchise in Saudi Arabia released a statement clarifying that the decision to provide meals to the Israeli military was the result of an individual choice made by the Israeli franchise. “In regard to the news that McDonald’s in Israel was donating meals, we affirm that it was an individual decision on their part,” read the statement. “Neither global McDonald’s nor us nor any other country had a role or relationship with that decision, neither directly nor indirectly.”

While the Chicago corporate office declined to comment on the matter, a source close to the company in the United States emphasized that the Israeli franchise is an independent business that licenses the McDonald’s brand.

The situation highlights the challenge global companies face when operating in regions with diverse cultural and political perspectives. The fast-food industry giant must now navigate the differing stances of its Middle Eastern franchisees, all while continuing to provide its iconic menu to customers across the region.
