The iconic red-brick house from the Chicago-made 1990 holiday classic Home Alone is etched into the memories of fans worldwide. But what many might not know is that Macaulay Culkin, who portrayed the mischievous Kevin McCallister in the film, once entertained the idea of buying the house that made his character’s escapades legendary.
In an interview last year, Culkin shared the intriguing tidbit, revealing that he had briefly considered purchasing the home, located in Winnetka, Illinois, at 671 Lincoln Avenue. “It crossed my mind,” Culkin admitted. “I mean, it’s such a big part of my childhood and my career, and it’s a house that’s become so iconic. But at the same time, it’s a lot of house. And I don’t think I’d ever feel at home there — pun intended.”
The Home Alone house became a pop culture landmark following the movie’s release. Featuring prominently in the film’s slapstick sequences and heartfelt moments, the house’s Georgian-style architecture and cozy interiors became synonymous with holiday nostalgia. In 2011, the property was sold for $1.585 million after being listed for $2.4 million, according to real estate reports. In May 2024, the property was once again listed for sale, sparking renewed interest among fans and potential buyers alike. The property was listed for $5.25 million and boasts five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and modern amenities such as a gym, a hot tub, a screening room, and heated floors. While the final sale price in 2024 has not been disclosed, the listing generated significant buzz among fans of the movie.

Though Culkin ultimately decided against buying it, he’s not the only one who feels a connection to the house. “It’s funny because fans will say, ‘You should own it. It’s your house,’” he joked. “But I’m pretty sure the Wet Bandits left some unresolved plumbing issues.”
For Culkin, the memories of filming are more important than the property itself. “I’ll always love what that house represents,” he said. “But I’m happy to let it stay as a special place for fans to remember and revisit.”
While the Home Alone house remains privately owned, it occasionally opens its doors to the public. In December 2021, it was available for a special one-night Airbnb rental, complete with holiday decorations and nods to the film’s most famous moments. The event was a testament to the enduring charm of the movie and the house at its heart.
For Culkin, the decision not to buy the house hasn’t diminished his connection to it. “It’s cool to know that a place like that can mean so much to so many people,” he said. “It’s kind of like it belongs to everybody, not just one person.”
The house continues to captivate fans decades later, standing as a monument to holiday cheer, childhood mischief, and the timeless magic of Home Alone.
The house of ‘Old Man’ Marley, the mysterious neighbor from the film, located just down the street at 681 Lincoln Avenue, is also currently listed for sale. This property is on the market for $3.79 million, adding another layer of interest to the neighborhood’s connection to the beloved movie.
Tis the giving season
