Last season, on Chicago Fire’s milestone 200th episode, Jesse Spencer shocked fans by announcing that he was leaving the show.

His character, Matt Casey was then written off the show by making a life-altering decision to move to Oregon for three years to help raise the teen sons of his deceased friend.

During the episode Two Hundred, Casey tells Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) that he has to move to Oregon, and asks that she come with him. She’s taken aback by the news, and throws out the possibility of them splitting up, but the couple ultimately agrees to stay together to attempt a long-distance relationship.

Showrunner Derek Haas isn’t giving up hope that Jesse Spencer will return, stating during a Zoom press conference with People, “We’re going to keep it alive. This is a three-year commitment that Casey’s making but hopefully we’ll see him before those three years are done.”

“I never try to predict what’s going to happen production-wise,” said Haas. But we’re in the camp of whenever Jesse wants to come do an episode with us, we will move mountains and earth to make that happen.”

During a recent press junket to promote last week’s One Chicago Day event, Haas told TVLine he would love for Spencer to return for the season finale, “That would be amazing. That would be a coup for our show if we could talk Jesse into coming back. So status on that is all systems looking good. And yes, I talked to him last week so I’m very hopeful that that’s going to happen.”

Haas cautioned that he doesn’t want to “promise anything until cameras are rolling, but it is our great expectation that we will see both Casey and Brett in the finale, because giant, big exciting things are going to be happening. This will be the best finale ever, I’ll go ahead and say it.”

Previously, Haas told Variety he “would be mortified if there was a wedding that didn’t include Casey.”

Fans can look forward to new episodes of Chicago Fire Season 10, Chicago P.D. Season 9, and Chicago Med Season 7. The One Chicago dramas are scheduled to air the season finales on May 25, 2022.
