Leopold’s perilous trek through the Sudan

After a series of near-disasters from the time producer Malachi Leopold left Chicago in a snowstorm April 5, he and his doc subject, Lost Boy of the Sudan Kuek Garang, and a small contingent finally arrived in the Abek community area of Southern Sudan.

Here’s what Leopold reported to ReelChicago about their perilous journey to reach Garang’s small native village of Wengkulei.

“We missed our connection in London, were re-routed to Nairobi through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. All seven of our checked bags were missing for a week and we had to exchange currency on the black market.
