Kate Kane will be replaced, not killed off in ‘Batwoman’

(Showrunner says character will not die)

Last month, we reported that the star of the CW’s Batwoman, Ruby Rose, would be leaving the series and recast. Like most, we speculated that the character would simply be recast ala Darrin in Bewitched or Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Then rumors began to circulate that an entirely new character would wear the red-haired mantle and Kate would be killed off.

But it sounds like showrunner Caroline Dries has other ideas. Dries has responded to the rabid fan base and assured them that she no intention of killing the character off.

In a recent Twitter post, Dries debunked yesterday’s rumor that Bruce Wayne’s cousin will die in the CW series, and vowed not to follow the widely criticized “Bury Your Gays” TV trope.

“As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past 15 years, I’m well aware of the ‘Bury Your Gays’ trope and I have no interest in participating in it,” she explains. “Like you, I Love Kate Kane…We’ll never erase her. In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of Season 2.”

One of the big mysteries of Batwoman is the disappearance of her cousin Bruce Wayne who is of course Batman. So, having another Bat mysteriously vanish does add to possible intrigue and storyline. Is the multiverse? The Arrowverse has explored this ever since The Flash came to TV. What we do know is that Ruby Rose’s time as the character has reached its end, and a newly created character – Ryan Wilder – will suit up in her place.

Stay tuned. Same Batwoman channel. Same Batwoman time.

We think.

With cities reopening for production and Batwoman scheduled for a 2021 premiere, we expect the Bat to be riding around Chicago sometime in September.
