We can expect Jeremy Allen White to look a little “beefy” when Season 2 of his hit series The Bear premieres on June 22.
White didn’t take a break after filming season 1 of The Bear. He immediately began preparing for a very physically challenging role in the film, The Iron Claw, also starring Zac Efron.
Filming began last fall with White playing Kerry Von Erich, one of the siblings in the Von Erich wrestling family. Efron plays his brother Kevin Von Erich, and Harris Dickinson plays David Von Erich.
The film was written and directed by Sean Durkin. Here’s the official synopsis:
The Iron Claw is centered around the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers from the 1960s that had enormous success, and popularized the iron claw professional wrestling hold. However, they not only had to battle inside the ring, but fight the “Von Erich curse” outside of it.
In a recent interview with Esquire, White talks about his physical transformation for his role in the film, and what he had to do to prepare for playing the part of a beefy wrestler. Both White and co-star Efron made an amazing effort to convincingly play the pro wrestlers.
White gained 40 pounds of muscle to play Kerry “The Texas Tornado” Von Erich and explained how he needed to focus on eating.
“Yes, eating all the time. Like, never stopping. In the morning, I would have waffles, almond butter,” White told Esquire. “In the middle of the day, I was eating turkey patties and avocado all the time. It’s really just gross. You’re trying to consume as much as you possibly can, and, to be honest, you don’t feel great. I was training as well, but, I don’t know, trying to get that big, it’s no way to live.”
White said Efron blew everyone away, “Zac’s a maniac. He’s so focused and knowledgeable on training, diet, all that. In terms of a physical transformation, I think he kind of blew us all out of the water. He looks really amazing in this thing.”
When asked if his fans should be excited about The Iron Claw, White excitedly replied, “I think you should be hyped. I was a fan of wrestling, but I didn’t know the story of the Von Erichs, and it’s so interesting — bonkers, and sad. Sean [Durkin] did a beautiful job. He’s been a fan of wrestling and the Von Erichs since he was a kid, and so I feel like he understands the story so intimately that he had a really nice perspective on it. And it was a blast to work with Zac and Harris.”
A24 and Access Industries co-financed The Iron Claw, which Sean Durkin wrote and directed. Producers are Tessa Ross, Derrin Schlesinger, Angus Lamont and Juliette Howell. The film was developed by House Productions with the support of Access Entertainment and BBC Films. Also in the cast are Lily James, Maura Tierney, and Holt McCallany as Fitz Von Erich, the patriarch of the Von Erich family.
The film has been completed, with no official release date announced yet.
